Hello and welcome back to the Spring at Carr Mill Primary School. Over the last week the children and I have been busy getting to know each other and the other staff who support our learning; Mr Gardner.
Homework and reading expectations
Every week, children should read at home at least 4 times and have this recorded in their reading records (one of these sessions should be Reading Plus). Reading records will be checked on a Wednesday. The children should record what they have read, and then write 2 sentences about this. All entries will need to be signed by an adult.
Homework is given out at the beginning of each new learning challenge. A topic sheet with several homework activities will be stuck in the home learning journal.
Each week the children can choose one activity they prefer to do in their journal and hand this in as normal. There will also be a spelling sheet sent home; this indicates which spellings the children will be focusing on each week. For Maths we are asking the children to go onto TT Rockstars. The expectation is 10 minutes per week on the games.
Key information
PE sessions for Class 7 are Monday afternoon (outdoor) and Thursday afternoon (swimming). Please ensure that the children have the correct PE kit in school (for outdoor PE, children will need plain jogging bottoms, a plain jumper and trainers).
Thank you for your continued support, Miss Lenton.

Class 7 Assembly
An amazing well done to all of Class 7 for their performance on World War 1 today! You all did amazingly well, speaking with such confidence and intonation. You should all be incredibly proud of yourselves.
Our class assembly celebrated all the things that we have learnt about WW1 in geography (maps and changing borders), history (what happened during the war), English (reciting the Christmas Truce poem to music) and music (singing those fantastic traditional WW1 songs).
Year 5/6 Homework Autumn 2
Here is the current homework for Autumn 2 term. Children must complete both sets of spellings and a piece of learning challenge homework. Don’t forget, reading should be completed 3 times a week and an additional session of ReadingPlus should also be done.
Class 7 go to Chester Zoo
To celebrate all the work that we have done with Chester Zoo in our learning challenge “Can Carr Mill Save the Songbirds?”, the whole school took a trip to Chester Zoo. We took part in a workshop that told us all the dangers that the songbirds of Indonesia face and saw some of the songbirds that we’ve been learning about up close!

Shakespeare Festival 2019
Here is some of the fabulous art work produced by our pupils during Shakespeare Festival 2019.
The children in Foundation Stage made fairy wands, fairy gardens and fairy layered pictures.
Key Stage 1 children created an amazing patchwork quilt inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Showcasing their textiles skills.
In Years 3 and 4 Julius Caesar was the inspiration. The pupils each designed and made a printing block. These prints were combined with a sculpture to represent the theme ‘Revenge’.
Years 5 and 6 were studying Hamlet and as well as some sketches to represent the story, they also created multi media images.
Each class were challenged to create an exploding book for their play to celebrate World Book Day.
Please have a look at the photos below.
Class 7 Hamlet Digital Literacy
Class 7 have been looking at re-telling the story of Hamlet in different ways.

Enterprise
Congratulations to classes 7, 8 and 9 who came 2nd in the Enterprise competition to regenerate Goodison Park! A team of 8 children went to Goodison Park to present their ideas infront a panel of judges. All children were an absolute credit to school and we could not be more proud. As a result, the children will have a training session in the new year with coaches from Everton.
Year 5 Crucial Crew
On Tuesday, Year 5 went to Crucial Crew at The Totally Wicked Stadium. They learnt about road safety and how to make sure people are safe in a medical emergency. They now know all about CPR, the recovery position, calling 999 and when to call 101 in non-emergency situations.

150 Years of St Helens Celebration
St Helens is celebrating it’s 150th birthday this year. We have joined a group of St Helens schools to create an art gallery in the town centre celebrating our town.
Artist Dave Bixter worked with a group of children in school to produce some stunning collaborative art work.
The children learned new drawing and sketching techniques such as continuous line drawing and using a pin hole viewfinder to look very closely at what they are drawing.
The artwork is currently being displayed in St Helens town centre in the shop windows along Church Street and inside Parish Church. Please take the time to visit and have a look!
Well done to those children whose work is exhibited, the results of your work are outstanding!

Class 7 Assembly
Class 7 – well done! You gave an amazing performance this week to show everyone what we have been learning about the Egyptians. I am so proud with how well you all did.
Thank you to everyone who came to watch and then take part in crafts and quizzes afterwards.
If you missed the performance or would like to watch it again, the link can be found underneath.
Here is the homework for classes 7, 8 and 9 for Autumn 2 term. This will run from 2.11.18 until Christmas.
Maths – finding prime numbers
Some children were set the task of finding out if a number was a prime number or not. They did this by seeing if they could make rectangles with that number of cubes. Here they are, hard at work.
