As part of our intent to make every child a reader, here are a few activities to help your child with their phonics and reading.
Learning to read at home with Read Write Inc. Phonics during School Closure
Daily lessons for children
From Monday 23rd March there will be Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons on Facebook and YouTube for children to watch at home.
There will be three short Speed Sound lessons with one of the RWI trainers every day for the next two weeks. The films will only be available at the times below:
- Set 1 Speed Sounds at 9.30 am and again at 12.30 pm (Appropriate for Nursery and Reception)
- Set 2 Speed Sounds at 10.00 am and again at 1.00 pm (Appropriate for Reception and Key Stage 1)
- Set 3 Speed Sounds at 10.30 am and again at 1.30 pm (Appropiate for Reception and Key Stage 1)
Please note: the films are streamed live and won’t be available at other times.
Children’s Reading Books
Each week your child brings home their phonics books they have worked on during their star skills session for that week. At the front of the book, there is a grid with ‘red words’ on and at the back of the book, a page to read ‘green words’ speedily. (Click on the three images below)
Reading Activities: Ask your children to practice reading the words across the rows, down the columns and in and out of order. This will help them build speed. By the end of the program we expect children to be reading 70-100 words per minute with a book that is matched to their phonic knowledge.
If you child likes to read comics tap into http://www.phonicsplaycomics.co.uk/comics.html Here your child can read comics that are fully decodable. Use their star skills reading book to guide you to what level to access.
Teach you monster to read also has activities where they can use their phonics through games. The app is still free to download until the end of the month.
