In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

This consists of 7 areas of learning and development.

The Prime Areas are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

The Specific Areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understand of the World
  • Expressive arts and Design

Characteristics of Effective Learning

As well as Early Learning Goals we also observe the 'Characteristics of Effective Learning'.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning describe learning as a process and not as an event.

The three characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:

-Playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and have a go

-Active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements; and

-Creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.

We plan to meet the aims of our curriculum through child centered learning alongside our wonderful learning environment - indoors and outdoors.

Activities:

We plan wonderful small group times with activities that help to meet the needs of our children and our curriculum. These include:

-Dough disco and Funky Fingers

-Helicopter stories

-Squiggle whilst you wiggle

-Story Dough

-Drawing Club

-Story time

-Maths activities

-Circle time (PSED based)

-Jigsaw

-RWI Phonics

-TenTown Maths

-Numberblocks

SEESAW APP

If you are a parent or guardian at Carr Mill, you will have been given the opportunity to link your email address to your child's journal to receive additional photos, videos, updates, links, news and a class update from the SeeSaw App available on all Apple or IOS devices.

The Reception Baseline Assessment - RBA

Within the first six weeks of starting Reception, your child will take part in the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA).

This is a short, interactive activity using familiar materials—it is not a test. There is no "pass" or "fail," and no pressure is applied.

It simply helps us understand how to best support your child's progress from their very first day until they leave us in Year 6.

Teaching Reading

At Carr Mill we teach each child to read using the Read Write Inc. Scheme. Starting in Reception we teach all Set One Sounds as well as Oral Blending to read. We assess the children regularly and group them accordingly. We have our first Stay and Play Reading session shortly and will be sharing ideas and activities that you can do at home to support your child.

Staff are available on the door each day to discuss anything you would like to know but alterntaively you are invited to make an appointent via the school office if you have anything further to discuss.

Welcome to #TeamCarrMill
