Phonics

At Carr Mill Primary we ensure that our children are learning how to read through our phonics program.  RWI- Read, write, inc is our chosen program and we have been using it at Carr Mill since 2008.

Children who are accessing RWI in KS1 receive a RWI session every day.  In the session they will do a mixture of the following: reading, consolidating reading of words with set sounds they have learned and reading words that are new, comprehension and spelling. The amount of each will vary depending on the level and the colour group the children are in.

As the children progress through the program they begin to increase their reading speed.

I am Mrs Dixon and along with Miss Prendergast we lead RWI across school. The expectations of progress are below along with help sheets for parents at home.  Children at Carr Mill start RWI in nursery and through to reception.  The progression shows how they should progress. Children are screened every 5-6 weeks and then assigned to a group related to their phonic level.

The books that they take home will match that phonetic level and ensure they are able to practise what they have been learning in school that week.

We are holding some phonics sessions for our receotion parents over the next few weeks to introduce you to the RWI scheme.
