Design Technology
I believe that high-quality Design & Technology education should spark children’s imagination, build their confidence and encourage them to think critically about the world around them. DT offers pupils the opportunity to explore ideas, solve problems and develop practical skills through engaging, hands-on experiences. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is taught discretely, while still making purposeful links to wider learning so that children see clear connections between their creative work and the themes they study in class.
Working closely with staff across the school, I have ensured that each DT unit is carefully sequenced and progressive, enabling children to build on what they have learned before. Our curriculum gives pupils structured opportunities to design, make and evaluate products that are functional, appealing and suited to a real purpose. Throughout their time at school, children develop skills across the key DT strands:
-
Structures
-
Mechanisms
-
Textiles
-
Food Technology
-
Electrical Systems
This progression helps pupils grow into confident, capable designers who can apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-life contexts.
Where practical, we strengthen learning through links with our English texts and wider curriculum. For example, younger pupils might design simple moving products inspired by a story they are reading, while older pupils tackle more complex design challenges that connect to their topic work. These purposeful links help children understand the relevance of DT and motivate them to innovate and be adventurous in their ideas.
My name is Miss Taylor, and I am proud to lead Design & Technology at Carr Mill Primary School. My role is to support teachers, nurture pupils’ creativity, develop high-quality resources, monitor standards and ensure our DT curriculum remains ambitious and exciting for all learners.

I believe that DT gives children the freedom to explore, create and problem-solve in ways that build independence and resilience. By the time they leave our school, I hope every child sees themselves as an imaginative designer and confident maker, equipped with the skills they need to shape and improve the world around them.
Please keep an eye on this page for updates and examples of the wonderful DT work produced by our talented pupils.
