PSHE
Vision
Hello my name is Ms Campbell and I am the PSHE lead at Carr MIll. At Carr Mill Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is at the heart of helping children become the very best version of themselves academically, socially and morally.
Our school ethos of #TeamCarrMill #StrongerTogether reflects our commitment to creating a caring, inclusive and supportive environment where every child feels valued, respected and able to thrive. We recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, emotionally secure and connected to others.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we support children in developing the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes they need to navigate an increasingly complex world. We aim to nurture confident, resilient and responsible individuals who understand how to build positive relationships, maintain their wellbeing and contribute positively to their communities.
PSHE enables children to explore their own values, understand and respect the views of others and develop the confidence to make informed choices. It promotes British Values, celebrates diversity and prepares pupils for life in modern Britain.
Intent
At Carr Mill Primary School, we want our children to leave primary school equipped with the knowledge, understanding and personal attributes needed to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.
Our curriculum is designed to help children:
• Develop emotional literacy, resilience and self-confidence.
• Build healthy, respectful relationships.
• Understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy.
• Stay safe both online and offline.
• Appreciate diversity and challenge stereotypes.
• Develop responsibility, independence and aspiration.
• Become active and responsible citizens.
• Understand their rights and responsibilities within society.
We recognise that childhood today presents both opportunities and challenges. Our curriculum therefore provides children with age-appropriate knowledge and practical skills that enable them to manage change, make informed decisions and seek support when needed.
Through high-quality Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RSHE), children learn about healthy relationships, personal safety, wellbeing and growing up in a way that is progressive, inclusive and developmentally appropriate.
Implementation
At Carr Mill Primary School, PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw PSHE programme, a comprehensive and progressive scheme of learning that supports children's personal development from Reception to Year 6.
The curriculum is organised into six half-termly themes, known as "Puzzles":
Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Dreams and Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships
Changing Me
These themes are revisited each year through a spiral curriculum, enabling children to build upon previous learning and deepen their understanding over time.
PSHE is taught through a dedicated weekly lesson of approximately 60 minutes in every class. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, reflection, collaboration and problem-solving, helping children to apply their learning to real-life situations.
PATHS
Alongside Jigsaw, we continue to incorporate elements of the Barnardo's PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) programme.
Approaches such as Pupil of the Day, Compliments and the explicit teaching of emotional awareness and self-regulation support children's social and emotional development and contribute to our positive school culture.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) is embedded throughout daily provision. Our Nursery children follow the PATHS programme as their main PSHE driver, developing emotional literacy, self-regulation and positive relationship skills. In Reception, children begin to access the Jigsaw PSHE programme, ensuring a smooth progression in their personal, social and emotional development.
The principles and values taught through PSHE are reinforced across school life through assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities, wider curriculum experiences and our strong focus on wellbeing, safeguarding and positive relationships.
Changing Me (RSE)
Below you will find the knowledge organisers for the Changing Me unit in each year group.
We encourage parents and carers to view the Changing Me Overview for Teachers and Parents, which outlines the learning for each year group and includes key vocabulary and suggested discussion questions to support conversations at home.
If you have any questions about the programme, please contact your child's class teacher.
Impact
By the time children leave Carr Mill Primary School, we aim for them to be confident, resilient and respectful young people who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond primary school.
Our children will:
• Understand how to build and maintain healthy relationships.
• Demonstrate kindness, empathy and respect towards others.
• Recognise and manage their emotions effectively.
• Understand how to maintain positive physical and mental wellbeing.
• Make informed and responsible choices.
• Understand how to stay safe in a range of situations, including online.
• Appreciate diversity and challenge unfairness or discrimination.
• Show confidence, resilience and independence.
• Understand and demonstrate British Values.
• Be active, responsible members of their school and wider community.
• Approach new experiences and challenges with confidence.
Through our PSHE curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to flourish both now and in the future, enabling them to make a positive contribution to society and continue their journey as lifelong learners.
