ROWAN - Summer 2 week 1

Date: 5th Jun 2025 @ 4:26pm

Can you believe that we are already in our final term of year 5?!

We’ve had a fantastic and focused week of learning in class!

In English, our writing lessons have centred around using parenthesis – the extra information we add to sentences using brackets, dashes, or commas. The children have enjoyed experimenting with different types and placements, adding humour and depth to their writing. Alongside this, we’ve been honing our SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) looking at how to vary sentence structure and ensure accuracy in punctuation.

In Reading, we’ve begun our exciting new class text: The Explorer by Katherine Rundell. The children are already hooked by the mysterious crash landing in the Amazon! We’ve been developing our skills in inference, prediction, and explanation – encouraging the children to “read between the lines” and make thoughtful connections between clues in the text and their own ideas.

In Maths, we’ve started a new topic: Position and Direction. The class has been learning how to read and plot coordinates on a grid, and how to describe movements and turns. We’ve also begun interpreting simple graphs, which links beautifully with our real-world problem-solving work.

In History, we’ve had some brilliant discussions this week as we explored Crime and Punishment through the ages, comparing how justice has evolved over time. We also began our new unit on The British Empire.

We have had lots and lots of fun at playtimes as we introduce our new OPAL time.

It’s been a week full of questions, ideas, and thoughtful conversations. Thank you for your continued support – it makes all the difference. As always, please do get in touch if you have any questions.
