Sycamore - Summer 1 WEEK 1

Date: 17th Apr 2026 @ 2:15pm

Hello everyone,

What a lovely, busy week we’ve had in class for our first week in Summer Term 1.

In English, we’ve started our new book: The Arrival, which the children have been really intrigued by. As it’s a wordless book, we’ve been exploring it in a slightly different way—focusing on how images alone can tell a story and more importantly, how they convey emotion. The children have had some fantastic discussions about what characters might be feeling based purely on visual clues. We’re now building up to writing our own version of the opening scene, with a strong focus on key grammatical features such as expanded noun phrases, varied sentence structures, and accurate punctuation.

In Maths, we’ve wrapped up our work on fractions of amounts—well done to everyone for their hard work on this topic! We’ve now moved on to perimeter and area, where the children have begun measuring and calculating around shapes. It’s been great to see them applying their knowledge in practical ways.

In Geography, we’ve started our new topic on human geography. This week, we’ve been looking at human settlements—what they are, why they develop and how they differ. The class has enjoyed thinking about the features of villages, towns, and cities and discussing why people choose to live where they do.

PE has been full of energy as we begin practising for Sports Day! The children have been working on a range of skills including running, coordination and teamwork. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm and encouragement for one another.

Just a quick reminder that homework is due in on Wednesdays. This includes TT Rockstars and reading at least four times a week. Thank you for your continued support with this at home—it really does make a difference.
